LHC Receives an Energy Boost

The Large Hadron Collider is back in operation after its long winter break, last Thursday scientists once again used it to smash proton beams against each other but this time collision energies and therefore speeds were much greater.

A world record was created when particles were forced to collide with an energy of eight trillion eV (electron volts), it is hoped that at such increased velocities the collisions will finally yield proof of the existence of the elusive Higgs Boson particle which scientists hope will finally explain how and why mass comes into being.

Some questions that come to mind are what powers this thing and what is its carbon footprint?
